What we look at
Every app gets a score out of 10. We weigh five things:
- The core job. How well the app does what schools buy it for, such as running a gradebook, sending messages families read, or giving useful practice.
- Setup time. How long it takes a teacher or administrator to get going, and how much training staff need.
- Cost to a school. What the free plan covers, whether prices are published, and what a school really pays once add-ons are included.
- Privacy and data handling. What the vendor documents about student data, hosting, certifications, advertising and AI use.
- Platform support. Whether it works on the devices students and teachers actually use.
Where the facts come from
We check features, plan names, prices and privacy claims against the vendor's own pages, help centres, privacy policies and app store listings. We only give a price when the vendor publishes it, and we note when we checked it. When we can't confirm something, we leave it out or say so in the review.
How rankings work
Category rankings sort apps by score.
Keeping reviews current
Each review shows the date it was last updated. We re-check reviews when vendors change plans, prices or ownership, and we update the date when we do.
Independence
Vendors cannot pay for a higher score or position. Vendors who ask for a review pay a fee for the reviewer's time, and that fee never changes the verdict. If we earn a referral fee from a link, the link says so.
