Blackboard LMS is the learning management system that most people still call Blackboard Learn. It is one of the oldest LMS products, and it is used mostly by universities and colleges, with some school districts and international schools. The product has had a turbulent few years. Anthology, which owned it, filed for Chapter 11 in September 2025, sold its student information, finance and enrolment businesses, and came out of the process on 2 March 2026 renamed as Blackboard. The LMS is now the core of that smaller company, alongside Ally, Illuminate and Evaluate.

Who it’s for

Blackboard suits a university, college or large district that already runs it and has staff who know it well. If your institution has ten years of courses, test banks and grade history in Blackboard, the case for staying is strong, especially now that the move to the Ultra Course View is nearly done.

For a school choosing an LMS for the first time, it is a harder sell. The vendor’s LMS page talks about instructors, courses and institutions, and the product has no particular tools for primary pupils or for keeping parents informed. A secondary school will usually get more from Canvas, D2L Brightspace or Google Classroom for less setup. Our learning management rankings compare them.

What it does well

The Ultra Course View is a cleaner design than the old Blackboard. A course is one page of content, with tests, assignments, discussions and documents in a single list, and students see the same layout on the web and in the Blackboard LMS App for iOS and Android.

The AI Design Assistant is the most useful recent addition for teachers. In an Ultra course, an instructor can ask it to suggest a module structure, draft test questions, build a grading rubric or generate an image. Nothing goes to students until the teacher reviews and edits it, and the institution has to switch the tools on before staff can use them. For a teacher building a new unit, it takes out much of the first-draft work.

The gradebook has been rebuilt with a Grid View that will look familiar to anyone who has used a spreadsheet markbook. Blackboard also offers AI Conversation, which it describes as a way for instructors to test students’ practical skills in a controlled digital setting.

Integration is a strength. Blackboard supports LTI 1.3 and REST APIs, and lists Turnitin, Zoom, Microsoft Teams and most SIS platforms among its connections. If your institution depends on a publisher platform or a plagiarism checker, it will almost certainly plug in.

Where it falls short

The Original Course View is ending. Blackboard’s help pages say 31 December 2026 is the last day to make changes to Original courses. From 1 January 2027 those courses become read-only, with no grading or submissions, and from 1 January 2028 they convert to Ultra. Institutions still teaching in Original courses have weeks left to move, and teachers will need time to rebuild assessments that do not convert cleanly. Our LMS rollout plan covers how to schedule that kind of switch.

The company is the bigger question. Blackboard says it came out of restructuring debt-free, but a vendor that has just been through bankruptcy and sold most of its other businesses is a risk to weigh on a multi-year contract. Ask about contract length, exit terms and data export before you sign.

Some tools cost extra. AVA, Blackboard’s AI assistant for teaching and student support, is sold as a premium add-on, and Ally is a separate product. Check which of these your quote includes.

Staff who come from Google Classroom find more settings and menus, and course quality varies unless someone sets templates and trains staff.

Pricing

Blackboard does not publish prices. Pricing is quoted per institution after a demo or sales call. Ask for add-ons such as AVA, Video Studio and Ally to be priced separately, because Blackboard lists them as their own products.

Privacy and data

Blackboard’s privacy statement says it does not sell or rent personal data to third parties, except as part of a merger or acquisition. It says it does not use student information for behavioural targeting of advertisements to students, though it may place contextual ads where the institution’s agreement allows. It says it does not knowingly collect information from children under 13 without the institution’s consent and authorisation.

Blackboard hosts its products on Amazon Web Services and Microsoft, with a regional hosting strategy, and says support staff may access data from the United States and the Netherlands. Its trust centre lists ISO 27001, ISO 27701 and FedRAMP. For AI, Blackboard publishes a Trustworthy AI approach and says institutions must opt in before generative AI features are available. Our student data privacy checklist lists the questions to put to the vendor, including which hosting region your data will sit in.

Verdict

Blackboard LMS is a capable platform for universities and large institutions that already run it, and the Ultra course view and AI Design Assistant make it easier to use than it was. The vendor’s 2025 to 2026 restructuring and the end of Original courses mean you should review your contract and migration plan now. Schools buying their first LMS, and anyone who wants a simple tool for setting and collecting work, should look at Canvas, Brightspace or Google Classroom instead.
