SchoolStatus Connect is the new name for ClassTag, a family communication app that SchoolStatus bought in August 2023. Teachers post photos and updates to a class feed, message families, and run sign-ups for conferences, volunteers and donations. SchoolStatus has folded it into a district product that pulls attendance, grades and behavior data from the student information system, so a district can send automated absence notices and target messages using that data. It is used in US schools, and a free version for teachers still exists.
Who it’s for
The paid product is for US districts and schools that want messaging tied to student data. An assistant principal can build a group of students with more than five absences this term and send their families a message, or set up automatic absence notices, without exporting spreadsheets. District communications staff get mass notifications by phone, text, email and app, newsletters built with Smore, and reports on what each family has received.
The free basic plan is for teachers who want class updates and sign-ups. A kindergarten teacher can post photos from the hundredth day of school, ask for volunteers for the class party, and let families pick fall conference slots, all from one app.
What it does well
Sign-ups have always been ClassTag’s strength. Conference scheduling, volunteer requests, RSVPs and donation requests sit inside the same app families use for messages, and families get reminders before the slot. A teacher who used to send home a paper conference schedule and then juggle swaps by email can let families choose and change slots themselves.
Messages reach families in several ways. SchoolStatus says messages go by phone, text, email or app, so a family that never installs the app still gets the note about early dismissal. Two-way messages are translated automatically, and SchoolStatus says it covers more than 130 languages.
Teachers keep their personal numbers private. The paid platform gives staff a virtual phone number, with call transcripts and recordings, so a teacher can call a family from a cell phone without sharing it, and the school keeps a record of the conversation.
The data link is the main reason a district would choose Connect over a messaging-only tool. SchoolStatus also sells student data tools, so groups and automated messages can use attendance, academic, behavior and assessment data. A school worried about chronic absence can track every contact with a family in one log.
Where it falls short
The free plan is paid for by sponsors. The developer’s replies on its App Store listing describe it as a “free, brand-supported plan” and say teachers and parents can remove ads by buying a subscription, while schools on the paid platform don’t see ads. At least one parent review on the App Store complains about obtrusive ads and accidental taps through to sponsor sites. For a tool that families of young children open every day, that is a real drawback.
The App Store privacy labels go further than we would like. The developer lists coarse location and contact details, including email, name and phone number, as data used for advertising or marketing. A school that cares about families’ data should not encourage teachers to use the free plan without reading those labels and the privacy policy first. Our student data privacy checklist is a good place to start.
The transition from ClassTag is not finished everywhere. The app is now called SchoolStatus Connect, but support contacts and the privacy policy link in the App Store still use classtag.com addresses, and some school websites still refer to ClassTag. Families may be confused about which app to install.
The district product is more complex than ClassTag was. Data dashboards, mass notifications, call recording and SIS-driven groups need setup and training, and a district has to decide who can message whom.
Pricing
SchoolStatus Connect has a free basic plan for teachers, supported by sponsors, and SchoolStatus’ help center says the basic plan allows unlimited classrooms. The district and school platform is paid, and SchoolStatus quotes prices per school or district after a demo. When we checked in November 2026, SchoolStatus published no prices for Connect.
Privacy and data
SchoolStatus’ privacy policy covers both Connect and ClassTag. It says data is encrypted at rest and in transit, and that account holders use strong passwords or single sign-on. It says SchoolStatus does not target marketing at parents or students, though it may share information about general website visitors with advertisers and ad networks. It also says de-identified data may be used for product improvement, research and business purposes. The policy does not name security certifications, hosting location or how it handles AI. Given the ad-supported free plan and the App Store labels, districts should ask whether the paid platform’s data terms differ from the free app’s, and get that in writing.
Verdict
SchoolStatus Connect’s paid platform is a reasonable option for a US district that wants messaging, absence notices and family contact logs driven by SIS data. The free plan still has good sign-up tools, but the sponsor ads and advertising-linked data labels make it hard to recommend for families of young children. Teachers who want a free tool without ads should look at Remind, and districts comparing full platforms should also look at ParentSquare and our parent communication rankings.
