Schoolbox is a learning management system and school community portal made by Schoolbox Pty Ltd in Melbourne. It combines class pages, unit planning, assessment and markbooks with a staff and parent intranet that carries news, notices, timetables and forums. Its customers are mostly K-12 schools in Australia, and the company says it supports schools in more than a dozen countries.
Who it’s for
Schoolbox suits a K-12 school, usually independent, that wants its LMS and its parent portal to be the same system. Picture a college where parents currently get the newsletter by email, check homework in one app and read sports fixtures on a third site. Schoolbox puts those on one dashboard with one login, branded as the school’s own portal.
It also suits schools that care about curriculum documentation. Heads of learning who need unit plans tagged against curriculum outcomes will use the planner and curriculum tagging more than a classroom teacher does.
A school that only wants homework collection will find it heavy. Schools already running Compass for attendance and reporting should check how much overlap they would pay for, although Schoolbox does integrate with Compass.
What it does well
The community portal is the main reason schools pick Schoolbox over a pure LMS. Each user gets a personalised dashboard with their timetable, news, due work and group activity. The school can post news to specific year levels, send push notifications and email digests, and run forums and polls. When the Year 10 camp is moved, the coordinator posts once and parents of that cohort see it on the dashboard and in their digest.
On the teaching side, classes are organised by course, class and lesson. Teachers build unit plans from templates, attach rubrics, collect work and mark it in the inline grader, which includes a similarity checker. Markbooks run at course, class and rubric level, and an assessment calendar shows when tasks cluster so a year coordinator can spot the week where four subjects all set essays. Summative reports come out as PDFs.
The Enhanced Learning and Elite Community plans add a pastoral care module. Teachers can flag wellbeing concerns about a student, and the module supports NCCD reporting, which saves learning support staff time when the annual collection comes around.
Integrations fit Australian schools. Schoolbox lists connections with Synergetic, Sentral, Edumate, Compass, Civica, iSAMS, Veracross, KAMAR and Wonde, plus Google, Microsoft 365, Google Classroom and LTI 1.3 tools.
Where it falls short
Schoolbox does not publish a native mobile app of its own. Its mobile experience is the responsive website. Schools that want an app in the App Store and Google Play buy one from Digistorm, a partner that has built a Schoolbox app since 2015. That is a second contract and a second vendor to manage.
Setup is a project. Schoolbox offers guided implementations, and you will want them, because someone has to design the portal structure, permissions, course templates and SIS sync. Plan for a term of work before launch. Our LMS rollout plan covers the stages.
The AI assistant is included in every plan, but Schoolbox’s pricing page says AI usage may incur extra costs. Ask how that is billed before staff start using it daily.
Deep quiz and course-sequencing tools are not its strength. A school that wants Canvas-style mastery paths will find Canvas stronger on that front.
Pricing
Schoolbox publishes prices per student per year, checked in November 2026. Schoolbox Learning, which includes the LMS and communication tools, costs A$29 per student on Essentials and A$37 on Enhanced. Schoolbox Community, the portal without the curriculum and assessment tools, costs A$17 on Essentials, A$21 on Enhanced and A$25 on Elite. Add-ons such as data analytics, school forms, photo management and Turnitin integration are listed separately, and implementation and consulting are quoted on request.
Privacy and data
Schoolbox says it has been assessed under Safer Technologies 4 Schools (ST4S), the Australian and New Zealand framework for checking edtech security and privacy. Its hosting document says cloud-hosted Australian and New Zealand schools run in the AWS Sydney or Melbourne region, with disaster recovery in the other city and file storage on Cloudflare with an Oceania location hint. Schools in Asia, the Middle East and Europe are hosted in Singapore or Frankfurt. Schoolbox also supports self-hosting on a school’s own infrastructure.
Schoolbox’s privacy policy says it processes customer data as a processor on behalf of the school, which is the controller. It says some personal information is handled by overseas service providers and publishes a subprocessor list.
Its AI policy says AI features are labelled, schools can connect their own AI provider, and an optional AI moderation feature sends content to third-party AI services named in the subprocessor list. Read that list and our AI policy guide before turning AI on for students.
Verdict
Schoolbox is a strong pick for Australian independent schools that want one branded portal for teaching, parents and pastoral care, with local hosting and published prices. Budget for a proper implementation and, if parents expect one, a Digistorm app. Schools that only need homework and attendance, or already run Compass across the board, may get enough from what they have.
