Sparx Maths is a homework platform for secondary maths, made by Sparx Learning in Exeter. Each week it sets every student a personalised homework drawn from the school’s scheme of learning, marks it, and tells the teacher who has finished and where they struggled. It is sold to whole maths departments rather than individual teachers, and it is used mainly in UK schools.

Who it’s for

Sparx Maths suits UK secondary maths departments that want one consistent homework routine from Year 7 to Year 11. Its question bank covers Key Stage 3 and GCSE. The typical buyer is a head of maths tired of homework set on different websites with no shared data.

It is less suited to a single teacher looking for a quick practice site, because Sparx sells to schools and assigns a School Success Coach to help the department get going. Primary schools and sixth forms need a different tool.

What it does well

The setting is automatic. A department picks or adapts one of Sparx’s schemes of learning, sets the pace and pathways, and the platform builds each student’s homework from what they have recently been taught and what they have got wrong before. Teachers can override the personalisation, but Sparx says they did so in under 1% of homeworks.

Homework comes in parts. Students must finish the Compulsory section, and they can then do XP Boost questions for consolidation and Target questions that stretch them further. Many schools expect every Compulsory question answered correctly before the homework counts as complete. Students earn XP for each part, and many schools tie rewards to it.

Bookwork checks are the part maths teachers tend to like most. As students work, the platform asks them to pick the answer they wrote in their book for an earlier question. A student who has been guessing or using a calculator app on every question gets caught out, and the habit of writing down working carries into lessons and exams.

Every question has a short support video. A Year 8 student stuck on expanding brackets at 9pm can watch it and try again instead of leaving the question blank. Sparx says the platform has over 45,000 questions and over 10,000 videos.

The reports answer the questions a head of department gets asked. Teachers see who has not finished, with hints about where they got stuck, and downloadable completion data by class, year group and demographic group. Sparx also sends weekly emails to parents and carers so they know what was set. Sparx points to a randomised controlled trial and external research with RAND Europe and the University of Cambridge as evidence that the homework improves outcomes. Read the studies yourself before quoting them to governors.

Sparx also sells Sparx Reader and Sparx Science, so a school can run the same homework routine in English and science if Maths works out.

Where it falls short

The insistence on getting every Compulsory question right is the main source of complaints from families. A student who keeps getting one question wrong can spend far longer than intended, and some give up. Talk to Sparx and your pastoral team about how you will handle this before launch, and make sure students know they can come to a homework club for help.

Sparx Maths runs in a web browser and needs a device and internet at home. Schools with many students who only have a parent’s phone, or no home internet, need a plan, such as library or lunchtime access. Our article on apps in a phone-free school covers the practical side.

There is no free version, so you cannot trial it informally with one class. The department has to commit, and pricing is a negotiation. Sparx also does a lot of the thinking for you. Teachers who like to hand-pick questions may find that frustrating.

Pricing

Sparx does not publish prices on its website as of November 2026. Pricing is quoted per school. Include the cost in your total cost of school software review alongside staff training time.

Privacy and data

Sparx’s support pages say the platform runs on Google Cloud Platform, with primary storage in Belgium and backups in Google’s European multi-region storage, and that all user data stays within the EEA. Sparx says application data is encrypted at rest and in transit.

Its published retention policy says parent data is deleted once their child is no longer an active user, and student and teacher personal data is kept for two years after they stop using the platform, then anonymised. Schools can ask for earlier deletion. Sparx keeps anonymised data, such as year of birth and question answers, for research, and says it deletes names, UPNs, dates of birth and IP addresses. Sparx is registered with the UK Information Commissioner’s Office. One of its support pages says it previously held Cyber Essentials Plus and chose not to renew, while working on re-certification, so ask for the current position during procurement.

Verdict

Sparx Maths is the strongest homework system we have looked at for UK secondary maths departments that want a consistent weekly routine and data they can act on. The bookwork checks and automatic setting save teachers real time. Primary schools, sixth forms and teachers who want a free tool they can try on their own should look at other learning apps instead.
