Gemini for Education is Google’s package of AI tools for schools. It covers the Gemini app, Gemini Notebook (the tool formerly called NotebookLM) and Gemini in Classroom, which is a Gemini tab inside Google Classroom with tools for planning, quizzes, rubrics and re-levelling text. Google includes it at no extra cost in all Google Workspace for Education editions, and admins decide which staff and students can use it.
Who it’s for
Gemini for Education suits any school already running Google Classroom and Workspace. A Year 8 science teacher can open the Gemini tab, generate a quiz that lands in Google Forms, re-level a reading for two students who struggle with the textbook and draft a rubric, without signing up for anything new. For IT leads, it is the easiest approved AI tool to switch on, because it uses accounts, admin controls and data terms the school already has.
Schools on Microsoft 365 can still use the Gemini app by signing up for the free Education Fundamentals edition, but they lose the Classroom tools that make it worth choosing. Teachers who want ready-made forms for every small task may prefer MagicSchool or Brisk Teaching.
What it does well
The Classroom Gemini tab is the strongest part. Google’s help page lists tools to outline a lesson plan, generate a quiz, create a rubric, re-level text, translate text into more than 100 languages, create a presentation and turn materials into a podcast-style audio lesson. Gemini can also convert a rubric saved in Drive into a Classroom rubric and write stories for Read Along. The quiz, project ideas, hook and misconceptions tools also work in the Classroom iOS and Android apps.
Teachers can make AI activities for students instead of handing them an open chatbot. Google calls these teacher-led AI tools. A teacher can build a Gem, such as a revision coach for a GCSE history unit, or a Gemini Notebook grounded in their own class materials, and assign it through Classroom. Since August 2026, students whose admin has turned the tools on also get a Gemini tab that uses the class, assignment instructions and materials to make flashcards, practice quizzes and study guides.
The Gemini app itself includes Deep Research, Canvas for building quizzes and interactive pages, Audio Overviews and Gemini Live, with limited use of Google’s premium models. Google says students under 18 get a separate experience with extra guardrails.
Admin controls are strong. IT can turn Gemini on or off by organizational unit or group, see usage reports and search Gemini conversations in Vault.
Where it falls short
The best teacher feature costs extra. Feedback drafting on written assignments, where Gemini suggests comments on a student’s work, needs Education Plus or the Teaching and Learning add-on. Full Gemini in Gmail, Docs and Meet needs the Google AI Pro for Education add-on.
Defaults need attention. Google’s August 2026 update made the student Gemini tab on by default for students of all ages, as long as they already had Gemini or Gemini Notebook enabled. A school that wants it off for under-18s has to create a separate organizational unit. Decide your position in your AI policy before the start of term, not after a parent asks.
The outputs are general. A Gemini lesson plan is a reasonable first draft, but it does not know your scheme of work unless you attach it, and quizzes need checking for wrong or ambiguous answers. Google’s admin help also documents a move from Gems to a newer feature called skills, so expect some Gem workflows to change.
Pricing
Google says Gemini for Education is free in all Workspace for Education editions, and qualifying institutions can get the Gemini app alone by signing up for Education Fundamentals. Checked in November 2026, Google AI Pro for Education costs $20 per user per month on a one-year commitment, or $24 per user per month billed monthly. Education Plus customers get 25% off on 50 to 999 licences, which brings the annual rate to $15, and larger orders are quoted by Google or a reseller. Education Plus and the Teaching and Learning add-on are quoted separately.
Privacy and data
Google says Gemini for Education is a core service under the Workspace for Education terms, and that chats are not reviewed by humans, not used to train AI models and not used for ad targeting. Its Generative AI Privacy Hub says the Gemini app and Gemini in Workspace hold SOC 1, 2 and 3 reports and ISO/IEC 27001, 27701, 27017, 27018 and 42001 certifications. The same page says Gemini Notebook does not yet support ISO, SOC or FedRAMP compliance. Google says Gemini app prompts and responses are kept for up to 36 months, with admin settings for retention. Run it through your student data privacy checklist like any other tool.
Verdict
For a school already on Google Workspace, Gemini for Education is the obvious first AI tool to switch on. It costs nothing extra, it lives in Classroom, and IT can manage it with tools they already know. Plan the student settings carefully, because the defaults are more open than many schools expect. Microsoft 365 schools, and teachers who want polished single-purpose tools, should look elsewhere.
