MagicSchool is a web platform with a long list of AI writing tools for teachers. Each tool is a form built for one job. You pick the rubric generator, describe the grade and the task, and it drafts a rubric you can edit. There are tools for lesson plans, text levelling, quiz questions, report card comments, behaviour plans and emails home, plus a general chatbot called Raina. On paid plans, teachers can also give students access to AI tools inside rooms they control. It is aimed at K-12 teachers and the districts that buy for them.

Who it’s for

MagicSchool suits a teacher who wants one place for the small writing jobs that eat into planning time. A Year 5 teacher who needs the same reading passage at three levels, a set of comprehension questions and a note to parents about the trip can do all three without switching sites. It also suits schools that want to give staff an approved AI tool instead of letting everyone use a consumer chatbot with no data agreement.

If you only need one thing, a narrower tool may fit better. Diffit is quicker for levelled readings, and Brisk Teaching is better if you mostly want feedback inside Google Docs.

What it does well

The tool forms save time because each one asks for the details its job needs, starting with the grade level. A blank chatbot leaves you to remember to mention the reading level, what students already know and the format you want. With the form doing that work, a first draft lands closer to usable, and you can then edit it or ask for changes, such as “make the starter shorter” or “add a hands-on activity”.

The free plan is wide. MagicSchool’s pricing page lists 80+ teacher tools, Raina, Quizzes and Class Writing Feedback on the free tier. Class Writing Feedback takes a set of student pieces and a rubric and drafts comments for each one, which you review before sending. For a teacher marking 30 persuasive paragraphs, that turns a blank page per student into an edit per student.

Student Rooms, on paid plans, are the safer way to let students use AI. The teacher picks which student tools are open, such as a writing feedback bot or a tutor for a topic, and sets the learning goal. Students sign in through the room instead of using an open chatbot.

The Chrome extension opens MagicSchool’s tools in a side panel in Gmail, Google Docs, Google Classroom, Canvas and Schoology, so you can draft a reply or a set of questions without leaving the page.

Where it falls short

The output reads well, which makes errors easy to miss. A generated science quiz can include a question with two defensible answers, and a levelled history text can drop a date or flatten a cause. Check every fact before you share it, and budget that time honestly. A ten-minute lesson plan that needs fifteen minutes of checking is a real cost.

The size of the menu works against new users. Many of the 80+ tools overlap, and a teacher can lose a planning period trying them out. Pick three or four that match your weekly jobs and ignore the rest.

Generated lesson plans also tend toward the same starter, activity and plenary pattern. Use the drafts as raw material, not as the lesson. Set expectations in your school’s AI policy so staff know where AI drafts are fine and where they are not, such as final reports or safeguarding notes.

Pricing

MagicSchool has three plans, checked in November 2026. Free costs nothing and includes the teacher tools, Raina, Quizzes and Class Writing Feedback. Plus costs $12.99 per month billed monthly, or $99.96 per year billed annually, and adds unlimited generations, output history, 50+ student tools, Student Rooms and student learning insights. Enterprise is priced by quote and adds a custom data privacy agreement, SSO, Clever, ClassLink, Canvas and Schoology integration, extra moderation on student tools and admin dashboards.

Privacy and data

MagicSchool’s privacy policy, effective 19 March 2026, says it does not use personal information to train AI models and lists a commitment not to use student data to train, fine-tune or improve models. Its help centre says third-party AI providers are contractually prohibited from storing or using your data to train their models. The policy says MagicSchool uses AI from multiple vendors through their APIs.

The policy says students under 18 may only use the service through MagicSchool’s agreement with a school or district, and that the service is designed for educators and schools. It asks users not to provide sensitive personal information, so keep student names, diagnoses and family details out of prompts. MagicSchool says it is FERPA and COPPA compliant and SOC 2 compliant, and lists GDPR safeguards, 1EdTech certification and a Common Sense Privacy seal on its privacy page. Ask for the data processing agreement and sub-processor list before rolling it out, and work through our student data privacy checklist.

Verdict

MagicSchool is the broadest AI toolkit for teachers, and its free plan covers most of what a classroom teacher needs. It saves real time on drafting, as long as you check the output. Schools that want student-facing AI should budget for Plus or Enterprise. Teachers who only need levelled texts or Docs feedback will find Diffit or Brisk quicker.
