Sentral is a school management system for Australian government and independent schools. It started in 1998, built by founders who came from schools, and Global Payments bought it in 2019. Sentral says the platform has more than 35 modules, covering student records, attendance, wellbeing, academic reports, health records, excursions, fees and payments. Parents use the Sentral for Parents portal and app, teachers have a mobile app for rolls and incidents, and students get a portal of their own.

Who it’s for

Sentral fits Australian schools that want the office and the pastoral side of school life in one system. A primary school can use it to mark rolls, record playground incidents, send excursion permission notes and collect payment. A secondary school can add academic reports, a student portal and health records for students with care plans.

Sentral sells separate versions for government and independent schools, and some modules differ between them. The enrolment journey, from first enquiry to enrolment, is only for independent schools, which run their own admissions. Government schools should check which modules their department allows before they plan around a feature.

It is built for Australian practice, so schools elsewhere should look at local systems. Our student information system rankings list the other options.

What it does well

Wellbeing and attendance are the daily core. Teachers mark rolls and log wellbeing incidents from the teacher app, so an incident at lunch gets recorded on the spot rather than written up at 4 pm from memory. The same app handles evacuation roll calls, which matters during a fire drill when the front office needs to know within minutes who is missing.

Health records are detailed. Sentral holds medical records, care plans, medication schedules and sick bay visits, so a relief teacher on excursion duty can check which students carry an adrenaline auto-injector or need asthma medication.

The parent side covers the tasks that used to fill school bags with paper. In Sentral for Parents, families explain absences, read wellbeing information, give permission for excursions and pay for them. The student portal shows timetables, attendance, notices, learning tasks and sport selections.

Finance tools suit schools that manage their own money. Sentral handles fees, contributions and discounts, financial reporting and online payments, and connects to accounting systems such as Xero and Microsoft Dynamics. It also sells add-ons: StudentPayPlus for canteen and uniform orders, Class Creator for building next year’s classes, and a self-service kiosk that signs students, visitors and contractors in and out.

Where it falls short

Sentral leaves some big jobs to partners. Timetabling and learning management come through partner integrations, so a secondary school will usually run a separate timetabler and an LMS, and needs those links to work reliably. Ask which partners Sentral supports and who fixes problems when the sync breaks.

The number of modules is a strength and a training burden. Two Sentral schools can look very different to a parent, depending on which modules they have switched on. A school that enables everything at once ends up with half-used features. Decide what Sentral is for in your school before launch, and use our parent communication policy guide to settle which messages go through the app.

Pricing

Sentral does not publish prices. Schools make an enquiry or book a demo and get a quote based on the modules they choose. StudentPayPlus, Class Creator and consulting and training are listed as separate products or services. Ask what payment processing fees apply to excursion and canteen payments, because they affect how much of each payment reaches the school. Include training days and the staff time for setup when you compare quotes.

Privacy and data

Sentral says it holds ISO 27001 certification and uses encrypted cloud storage. Its privacy policy says personal information is held in a database that “may be hosted on a cloud service within Australia”, and that Sentral may disclose personal information to related companies or third parties outside Australia. It lists security measures including encryption, two-factor authentication, account lockouts, staff confidentiality agreements and background checks.

The policy also says Sentral does not sell personal information, but that third-party partners may use shared information for marketing and targeted advertising, with an opt-out by email unsubscribe or by contacting Sentral. It says areas aimed at students use no cookies or tracking beyond internal operations. Before you sign, ask Sentral to confirm in your contract that student and parent data is never used for marketing, where it is hosted, and which overseas parties can access it. Our student data privacy checklist lists the other questions to ask.

Verdict

Sentral is a sensible choice for Australian schools that want attendance, wellbeing, health records, permissions and payments in one system with apps for parents and teachers. Plan for a separate timetabler and LMS, and tighten the marketing clauses in your contract. Schools that want teaching, marking and pastoral care in one platform should compare Tes SEQTA, and those after a similar all-in-one system should also look at Compass.
