Mentimeter is a Swedish presentation tool where the audience answers on their phones or laptops and the results appear on the big screen as you go. You build a deck of slides, some of them ordinary content and some of them questions: multiple choice, word clouds, rating scales, open text, ranking, Q&A and quiz questions with a leaderboard. Students go to menti.com, type a code and answer. It was made for meetings and lectures, and that shows in both its strengths and its gaps for schools.
Who it’s for
Mentimeter fits secondary teachers, sixth form and college staff, and university lecturers who want to hear from a whole room at once. A history teacher can open a lesson with “One word that describes life in the trenches”, show the word cloud, and pick out the misconceptions before teaching. It also works well in staff meetings, INSET days and parent evenings, where a head of year wants honest feedback without anyone having to raise a hand.
It is a weaker fit for primary classes. The terms set an age line at 16, and younger children respond better to the colour and noise of Kahoot! or Blooket.
What it does well
The open-ended slides are the best reason to choose it. Word clouds, open text walls and scales give you a picture of what a class thinks rather than just who got the right answer. Ask a Year 11 group to rate their confidence on each exam topic from 1 to 5, and in two minutes you know which topics need a revision lesson.
Responses are anonymous by default, and students need no account. That matters with teenagers. The student who never speaks in class will often type a real question into the Q&A slide, and the profanity filter keeps the screen safe to show.
It is quick to learn. A teacher who can build a slide deck can build a Mentimeter presentation in a lunch break, and Menti AI on the free plan can draft slides from a prompt. There is an add-in for PowerPoint, so you can keep your existing slides and drop interactive ones in between.
The results look clean on a projector. Charts animate in as answers arrive, and you can hide results until everyone has voted so the first answers don’t sway the rest.
Where it falls short
The free plan doesn’t cover a teaching week. Mentimeter’s plans page describes the limit in two ways, “unlimited participants once per month” on the plan card and 50 participants per month in the comparison table, with the count resetting monthly. Either way, a teacher with five classes will hit the ceiling in the first week. Mentimeter is a tool you pay for if you use it every day.
Quizzes are basic. You get multiple-choice and type-answer questions with points for speed and a leaderboard, but no homework mode with per-student reports like Kahoot! or Socrative give you. Because responses are anonymous, you can’t easily see which student got which question wrong. If you need that, use a different tool for the assessment and keep Mentimeter for discussion.
Mentimeter is built for business. Its terms of use call it “a business tool” and say that anyone under 16 confirms they are represented by a parent or guardian. That doesn’t stop schools from using it, but your data protection lead should read the terms before you use it with younger students.
Slides depend on the internet connection. If the school Wi-Fi drops mid-lesson, the activity stops.
Pricing
Mentimeter is freemium. When we checked the education plans page in November 2026, Basic cost US$8.99 per presenter per month and Pro cost US$14.99 per presenter per month, both billed yearly and excluding tax. Basic adds unlimited participants, import and export, and private presentations. Pro adds custom themes, co-editing and moderated Q&A. Enterprise, with single sign-on and LMS integration, is quoted. For 10 or more K-12 licences, Mentimeter asks schools to contact its sales team for a quote. The standard business prices are higher, so make sure teachers pick the education toggle.
Privacy and data
Mentimeter says customer data at rest is hosted in the EU by default, with US hosting available to Enterprise customers through sales. Its GDPR transparency statement says the company is ISO 27001 certified. Its privacy page says it will never sell your data and that data will not be used for profiling. The terms of use say Mentimeter does not and will not let any third party use your content or user data to train AI models. The terms and the data processing agreement cover both presenters and participants.
Participants answer without an account, and results are anonymous unless the presenter turns on a feature to identify them. To keep data to a minimum, don’t ask students for names or personal details in open-text slides. Our student data privacy checklist covers what else to check.
Verdict
Mentimeter is a polished tool for live polls, word clouds and anonymous questions, and it suits older students, lecturers and staff meetings. Most teachers will need a paid education plan to use it every week. Primary schools, and teachers who want scored quizzes with per-student results, should look at Kahoot!, Socrative or the rest of our assessment rankings.
