Nearpod is a tool for running interactive lessons. You build or import slides, then add activities between them, such as polls, quizzes, open questions, drawing tasks, matching games and short videos with questions. Students join with a code on their own devices, and the lesson moves on their screens as you teach, or they work through it alone at their own pace. Renaissance, the US assessment company behind Star tests, bought Nearpod in 2021. Nearpod suits teachers from upper primary through secondary who want to check understanding during a lesson, not only at the end.

Who it’s for

Nearpod fits teachers who teach from slides and want every student to respond, not only the three who put their hands up. In a Year 7 geography lesson on rivers, you can show a diagram, ask every student to label it on their screen, put the best answers up anonymously and then move on. It also works for absent students and cover lessons, because the same lesson runs in student-paced mode.

If you mainly want a short end-of-lesson quiz, a quiz tool like Wayground or Socrative is quicker. If your school already pays for Pear Deck, the two overlap heavily.

What it does well

Checks for understanding sit inside the lesson. Nearpod’s pricing page lists more than 20 activity types. Draw It asks students to sketch or annotate on a slide. Collaborate Board collects sticky-note answers from the class. Time to Climb turns a multiple-choice quiz into a short race. Open-ended questions and polls let you share chosen answers on the main screen without names, which gets quieter students into the discussion.

The library saves planning time. Nearpod lists more than 22,000 ready-made lessons and resources, including virtual field trips and video lessons with built-in questions. A teacher new to a topic can open a lesson, adjust a few slides and teach it the next day. Quality and curriculum fit vary, and most lessons follow US standards, so check before you use them in another country.

Live and student-paced modes use the same lesson. A student off sick can do Monday’s lesson at home on Tuesday, and you see their answers in the same report as the rest of the class. Gold and higher plans add Sub Plans, which help when you need to leave work for a cover teacher.

Reports after each session show every student’s answer to every activity. You can export them or read them on screen to plan the next lesson.

Where it falls short

The free Silver plan is tight. It allows 40 students per session and 300 MB of storage. A lesson with several videos and images uses storage fast, and a teacher with four classes runs out within a term. The Google Slides add-on, the AI question generator and Drag and Drop activities all need at least the Gold plan.

Student accounts, LMS integration, co-teaching, shared school libraries and admin reports are only in the School and District plan. Without accounts, students join each session with a code and a name, and tracking an individual over a term means matching names by hand.

Building takes time. Turning an existing slideshow into a good Nearpod lesson means deciding where to stop and ask a question, and writing those questions well. Expect your first few lessons to take much longer to prepare than a plain slideshow.

Lessons depend on every student having a working device. In a school with a shared Chromebook trolley, a flat battery or a slow login breaks the flow for that student, and the lesson keeps moving without them.

Pricing

Nearpod’s pricing page, checked in November 2026, lists four plans. Silver is free, with 300 MB of storage and 40 students per session. Gold costs $159 a year, with 1 GB and 75 students per session. Platinum costs $397 a year, with 5 GB, 90 students per session and student notes. The School and District plan is quoted per school or district and adds unlimited storage, 250 students per session, student accounts, full AI lesson creation, Nearpod’s maths and social studies programmes, LMS integration and admin reporting.

Privacy and data

Common Sense Privacy’s evaluation says Nearpod’s terms allow marketing emails and targeted ads on third-party sites for teacher users but not for students, and that Nearpod does not sell user data or use marketing tools on its student-facing platform. Nearpod’s privacy policy says it signed the Student Privacy Pledge, which the Future of Privacy Forum retired in 2025.

Renaissance says its privacy and security programmes complete a SOC 2 Type 2 examination every year, and that it engages iKeepSafe to certify its products against FERPA and COPPA. Nearpod also holds 1EdTech certification for LTI Advantage. Ask Renaissance which reports cover Nearpod specifically, and use our student data privacy checklist during procurement.

Verdict

Nearpod is a strong choice for teachers who teach from slides and want every student responding during the lesson. The free plan is enough to try it, but regular use needs Gold or a school licence. Teachers who only want quick quizzes should pick Wayground, and schools that already work in Google Slides may find Pear Deck simpler.
