SchoolAI is a web platform built around student-facing AI. A teacher builds a Space, which is an AI chat activity with a goal, instructions and limits, and shares a code with the class. Each student then works through the activity with an AI tutor while the teacher watches progress on a dashboard called Mission Control. There are also teacher tools, a teacher chat assistant called Dot and a browser extension. SchoolAI is aimed at K-12 schools and districts, and its paid plans are only sold to them.

Who it’s for

SchoolAI suits schools that have decided students should use AI in lessons and want the teacher in charge of how. A Year 9 history teacher could build a Space where students question a historical figure about a source, with instructions not to give away the answer to the essay question. If you only want AI to help with your own planning and marking, SchoolAI is more than you need. MagicSchool and Brisk Teaching are better fits for teacher-only work.

What it does well

Spaces put the teacher’s instructions between the student and the AI. You set what the AI should help with, what it should refuse and how it should talk, and SchoolAI says every Space starts with a teacher. A student who asks the AI to write their paragraph gets steered back to the task, if you set the Space up that way. Inside a Space, teachers can turn on PowerUps, which are small AI apps such as a graphing calculator, a doodle board, an image generator or translation.

Mission Control is the most useful part in a live lesson. It shows which students are engaged, which are stuck and suggested next steps, and it can sort students into groups. In a class of 30, that tells you which five students to go to first instead of walking the room hoping to spot them.

SchoolAI’s July 2026 post on its free plan says critical safety alerts stay active on every plan. SchoolAI also says its AI never poses as a human.

The browser extension works in Chrome, Edge and other Chromium browsers. It gives rubric-based feedback in Google Docs and can turn a web page into a Space. Some of its tools, including writing feedback and the notetaker, need a paid plan.

Where it falls short

Student-facing AI makes mistakes in front of students. A tutor can confirm a wrong answer, invent a quotation for a historical figure or explain a maths method in a way your department does not teach. The teacher’s instructions reduce this but do not stop it. Read a sample of chats after each lesson, and teach students to question what the AI tells them.

Reviewing chats takes time. Thirty students each holding a ten-minute conversation produce a lot of text. Mission Control summaries help, but if you never read the chats themselves, you are trusting the summary.

Some students learn to keep asking until the AI gives enough hints to finish, so keep some work off screen.

The free plan is now a trial in practice. SchoolAI’s July 2026 post says free accounts get five Space sessions per year, and each run of a Space counts as one. That is enough to try it with a class, not to use it every week. SchoolAI says it does not offer a self-serve paid plan for individual teachers, so ongoing use depends on your school or district buying it. Run a short pilot before you commit.

Pricing

SchoolAI’s pricing page, checked in November 2026, lists three plans without prices. The Free Trial plan has no expiry date and includes five Space sessions per year, most PowerUps, Dot, teacher tools and core browser extension features. Pro adds SIS rostering, unlimited Space sessions, admin alert routing, usage reports, full LMS integration and a customer success manager. Scale adds Student Portals and the student AI Sidekick, student uploads, student-level insights, custom standards and audit logs of student chats. Pro and Scale are priced by quote and sold only to schools and districts.

Privacy and data

SchoolAI’s trust page says student data “is used for one purpose only: student well-being and the advancement of learning,” and that it does not use student data to train AI models. It says its contracts with every AI provider it works with prohibit them from doing so too. It says it does not sell student data or share it with advertisers, and describes these as contractual commitments districts can hold it to.

SchoolAI says it is FERPA, COPPA and GDPR compliant, holds COPPA Safe Harbor certification and SOC 2 Type 2, and has 1EdTech TrustEd Apps certification. Its public pages do not state a minimum age for students, and some districts set their own consent rules, so check your local rules before younger students use it. Ask for the data processing agreement and work through our student data privacy checklist before rollout.

Verdict

SchoolAI is a strong choice for schools that want students to use AI in lessons under teacher control, with live visibility of what each student is doing. The free plan is now only enough for a trial, and pricing is by quote. Teachers who want AI for their own planning and feedback, or who cannot get a school licence, should look at MagicSchool or Brisk instead.
