ChatGPT for Teachers is OpenAI’s version of ChatGPT for school staff. It gives verified K-12 teachers, administrators and support staff in the United States a ChatGPT workspace with the full set of tools, plus admin controls for schools and districts. It is free through June 2028. OpenAI sells a separate product, ChatGPT Edu, to universities, and that plan does cover students. This review covers the K-12 teacher plan, since that is the one schools can get.

Who it’s for

ChatGPT for Teachers suits US teachers who already use ChatGPT on a personal account and should move that work somewhere with school-appropriate terms. A high school English teacher who uploads three chapters of a novel and asks for fifteen multiple choice questions in the style of their state’s end-of-course exam gets a draft in under a minute. It also suits district leaders who want one approved, centrally managed AI account for all staff instead of dozens of personal subscriptions.

It is not for students, and it is not available outside US K-12. Teachers who want ready-made forms for each task, or student-facing AI with teacher controls, should look at MagicSchool or SchoolAI.

What it does well

You get the general-purpose tool many teachers already know, with the limits taken off. The workspace includes file uploads, search, image generation and connectors. OpenAI’s page says you can build slides with Canva and pull lesson plans and files from Google Drive or Microsoft 365, so a chat can start from your actual unit plan rather than a description of it.

Because it is a general chatbot, it handles jobs that template tools do not cover. A teacher can ask it to plan a 20-day unit with a guiding question for each day, rewrite assignment directions so they are clearer to post in Canvas, translate a parent email into Spanish or write seven sample paragraphs of varying quality for students to mark against a rubric. OpenAI shows these examples on its plan page.

Collaboration is better than on a personal account. Teams can share projects and co-edit materials in one workspace, and custom GPTs let a department set up a shared template, such as a lesson plan format or a feedback style, that every teacher uses. ChatGPT can also remember a teacher’s style and goals between chats if they turn that on.

For IT, school and district leaders can claim their email domain to bring staff into one workspace, set role-based access and require SAML SSO and multi-factor authentication.

Where it falls short

A blank chat box puts the work on the teacher. Template tools ask for the grade, the standard and the format. ChatGPT only knows what you tell it, so vague prompts get vague, generic plans. Budget time for staff training on prompting and checking, or the tool will sit unused by the teachers who would save the most time.

Output needs checking. ChatGPT writes fluently and can still invent a quotation, misstate a date or produce a quiz question with two right answers.

It has no student side and no classroom integration. You cannot assign a tutor chat to a class, see student work or push a quiz into a gradebook. You copy the output into Google Classroom or your LMS yourself. Schools that want controlled student AI need a separate tool, and your AI policy should say which one.

The free period is generous but temporary. OpenAI first announced free access through June 2027 and later extended it to June 2028. After that it says it may introduce pricing with advance notice. If staff build habits and shared GPTs around it, plan for that date.

Pricing

Checked in November 2026, ChatGPT for Teachers is free for verified US K-12 teachers and school staff through June 2028. Verification uses SheerID to confirm that you work for an accredited K-12 school or district. OpenAI says it may adjust pricing after June 2028 and will give advance notice. ChatGPT Edu for universities is priced through OpenAI’s sales team.

Privacy and data

OpenAI says anything shared in ChatGPT for Teachers is not used to train its models by default, that data is encrypted at rest and in transit, and that the plan is built to protect student data with export options that help schools meet FERPA requirements. That wording stops short of a compliance claim, so your district still has to review it. In August 2026, 9to5Mac reported that OpenAI announced a data privacy agreement covering 16 states for the plan. OpenAI lists SOC 2 Type 2 and several ISO certifications on its ChatGPT Edu page, but its teacher plan page does not list certifications.

The plan is for staff only, so students should not be signed in. Teachers should still keep student names, grades and support plans out of prompts unless the district’s agreement covers it. Our student data privacy checklist lists the questions to ask.

Verdict

ChatGPT for Teachers is the most capable free AI workspace a US teacher can get right now, and the district controls make it a sensible replacement for personal ChatGPT accounts. It rewards teachers who are willing to write clear prompts and check what comes back. Schools outside the US, schools that want student-facing AI, and teachers who prefer guided forms should pick a tool like MagicSchool instead.
