Khanmigo is the AI assistant from Khan Academy, the nonprofit learning site. It has two sides. For students, it is a tutor that works alongside Khan Academy’s lessons and practice and asks questions to push them toward an answer instead of giving it. For teachers, it is a set of AI tools for planning lessons, writing rubrics and exit tickets and summarising what students have done. The teacher tools are free in most countries. The student tutor comes through a school or district plan, or through a paid parent or learner plan in the US.
Who it’s for
Khanmigo suits schools that already use Khan Academy for practice, especially in maths. A Year 7 student stuck on a ratio problem can ask Khanmigo for help, and it will ask what they have tried and point to the next step rather than solve it. The teacher sees the same skills and assignments in one place.
Its teacher tools suit any teacher who wants a free, careful AI assistant for planning. If you want a much larger menu of tools, MagicSchool has more. If you want students to use AI on lessons you design from scratch, look at SchoolAI.
What it does well
The tutor is built not to do the work for the student. Khan Academy says Khanmigo “challenges you to think critically and solve problems without giving you direct answers.” For a teacher worried that AI will become an answer machine, this is the main reason to choose it over a general chatbot.
It works alongside lessons students already use. Khanmigo tutors on Khan Academy content, so a student can get help on the same skill the teacher assigned. Khan Academy says the tutor covers maths, science, coding, history and humanities, from elementary school through college, and there is a separate Writing Coach for essays.
The teacher tools are free and sensible. Khan Academy’s help centre describes more than 25 teacher activities, including lesson plans, an IEP assistant, exit tickets and rubrics. The Khanmigo pricing page also lists standards-aligned lesson planning tied to Khan Academy content, summaries of recent student work and refreshers on subject content. Khan Academy’s blog says the teacher tools are available in more than 180 countries and territories, with some exceptions because of partner and legal restrictions.
Where it falls short
Student access is the biggest limit. Khanmigo’s site says classroom access for students is only available through school or district plans, so a teacher cannot switch it on for one class. Parent and learner plans are only open to adults in the US with a US billing address.
The tutor still gets things wrong. Maths problems with a single right answer are its strongest ground. In history or literature, it can give a confident summary that misses a point your scheme of work cares about, or accept a weak argument. Check a sample of student chats, and tell students that the tutor can be wrong.
Guided questioning can frustrate students. A student who wants a quick check of one step may find the questions slow, and some will give up or try to talk the tutor into the answer. Show the class how to use it before setting it loose.
The mobile app has a cut-down version. Khan Academy’s help centre says Khanmigo Activities are in the iOS and Android apps, but the chat box, teacher tools and parent tools are missing there. For the full version, students and teachers need a web browser, including a phone’s browser.
Pricing
Khanmigo’s pricing page, checked in November 2026, lists the teacher tools as free. Learner and parent plans cost $4 per month or $44 per year plus sales tax, and a parent can add up to 10 children under 18. District plans are priced by quote. Khan Academy’s school pricing page lists Enterprise Starter at $10 per student per year for up to 1,000 student licences for US schools, which includes Khanmigo for students and teachers. Larger districts get a custom Enterprise quote.
Privacy and data
Khan Academy’s help centre says it does not allow large language models to train on student data, and that names and personal information are not shared with LLM providers. Under-18s can only use Khanmigo when a parent gives them access or their district has a Khan Academy partnership. Teachers must be 18 or over to sign up.
Khan Academy says chats that are flagged for concerning content alert the student’s teacher or administrator, and that parents can read their child’s full chat history. Students are told that parents, teachers and administrators can see their chats. Khan Academy also offers a separate Khanmigo Lite inside ChatGPT, and its help centre says OpenAI’s policies apply there, so do not confuse it with the school product. Check both against your AI policy before students use either.
Verdict
Khanmigo is the most careful student tutor in this group, and its teacher tools are free nearly everywhere. Schools already using Khan Academy for maths will get the most from it. Schools outside the US, or teachers who cannot get a district plan, should treat it as a teacher assistant only and look at SchoolAI or MagicSchool for student-facing AI.
